Shark Nursery - who's home?
Latest update January 30, 2019 Started on January 30, 2019Cabo Pulmo National Park is home to a thriving reef community of fish. Every day divers explore these reefs. One bay away from Cabo Pulmo is a shark nursery. We will explore the nursery and observe the different species there.
Baja Coastal Institute's (BCI) Education to Action program works with high school students in Santiago and Los Planes, Baja California Sur, Mx. Our students study and develop projects in their communities to conserve natural resources.
Bob Stone, submarine scientist retired from NOAA will guide an expedition to explore the shark nursery that sits in the heart of Cabo Pulmo National Park, BCS, CA. While university students have counted sharks from the shore, there is almost no footage of the nursery. We will explore the nursery seasonally to determine what species use the nursery and the location favored habitats within the nursery.
The advantage of the ROV is that there is less disturbance to the nursery than submersing divers. We will conduct an expedition every quarter to observe the seasonal differences. Students from Education to Action will collect data and video that will be reported at the Cabo Pulmo Visitors' Center and online.
